Tahiti lived up to their billing of sever underdogs with a 6-1 defeat by Nigeria. An own goal by Vallar within five minutes set the tone, with Oduamadi adding two more before halftime. Tehau got one back, but then scored an own goal before Oduamadi completed his hat-trick and Echiejile completed the rout.

Spain were in superb form and hardly gave Uruguay a kick of the ball, but they only had the two goals by Soldado and Pedro to show for it when Suarez scored a late free kick, so the last few minutes were more nervous than they should have been.

Italy just managed to edge out Mexico in a tight confederations cup match. Pirlo his a superb free kick, which Hernandez cancelled out from the penalty spot. Balotelli had a very good game and capped it with the winning goal.

Brazil got off to a great start in the Confederations cup by beating Japan 3-0. The new Barcelona striker Neymat smashed a beauty after three minutes, a lead that Paulinho doubled after the break, before Oscat set up Jo for a late third.

Ecuador didn’t know what had hit them as Germany went four goals up before 30 minutes had gone. Podolski scored within 10 seconds and added another, with Lars Bender getting the other two. Ecuador got one back before halftime through Valenci and they got a second near the end to make it 4-2.

Belgium put four past the USA in this friendly. Mirallas, Benteke(2) and Fellaini showed Premier League class to leave the Americans scratching their heads.

England could only draw with Ireland, but it could have been worse after Shane Long headed the visitors into the lead. Lampard equalised and Cole and Walcott had chances to win it but it ended 1-1.

This was a great game to watch between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad. From the chances they created, Sociedad should have been clear winners, but they squandered most of them and Lopez was inspired in the Madrid goal. Higuain was gifted the opener and Callejon got the second before Prieto and Griezmann levelled, only for Khedira to instantly score and he seemed to have taken the points until a last gasp header gave the home team the least they deserved.

Barcelona moved to just one win away from equalling the all-time points record in La Liga by beating Espanyol 2-0 in the local derby. The goals by Alexis and Pedro mean that a home win over Malaga next week will leave them on 100 points.

Bayern Munich made up for last year’s disappointment with a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in a pulsating final at Wembley. Man Of the Match Arjen Robben set up Mandzukic for the opener and he scored a brilliant late winner. Dortmund had great chances and levelled from the spot but would rue their missed chances.
